Passport inquiry requires your presence, therefore an appointment must be booked in advance. This appointment can be booked through the “Booking an appointment for consular matters” button in the Start menu of our home page.

There are no rush or express services at our Consular Office.

ATTENTION! If you never had a Hungarian passport, or any Hungarian identifications, a certificate of citizenship must first be obtained. More information on this procedure can be found in the “Verification of Hungarian citizenship” section of the “Consular Information” menu.

There are two kinds of procedures available for passports at the electronic appointment booking system.

1. Passport; or

2. Passport and registration of birth, marriage, or divorce

Which procedure to choose?

  1. Passport application

Choose this procedure if you already possess a valid document proving Hungarian citizenship (a list of documents that prove Hungarian citizenship is found below) and if there has been no vital event that has not yet been registered by the Hungarian authorities. (For example: you were married in Canada but have not yet registered the marriage in Hungary, meaning, you do not have a Hungarian registration of marriage.)

  1. Registration of birth/marriage/divorce+Passport

Choose this procedure if you already possess a valid document proving Hungarian citizenship (a list of documents that prove Hungarian citizenship is found below) and if there has indeed been a vital event that has not yet been registered by the Hungarian authorities (i.e. you got married or divorced). According to current Hungarian legislation, you are required to have these life events registered, without which there is no possibility of submitting a request for a passport.

In the submission of a passport request, different rules apply to adults (those over the age of 18) and to minors (those under the age of 18), therefore necessary information will be found to be separated accordingly.

What should I bring with me when I submit a passport request?

For passport application for those over the age of 18:

1.Document proving Hungarian citizenship

The following documents are acceptable proof of Hungarian citizenship:

  • Valid personal identification, or
  • A passport that has expired less than one year ago, or
  • A valid certificate of citizenship (no older than three years), or
  • A document of naturalization.

If you do not possess any of the documents listed above, and the personal information and address registry system does not verify your Hungarian citizenship (this system will be consulted when the request for a passport is made), but you do have a Hungarian passport that has expired more than one year ago, an examination of citizenship must be conducted. We will provide you with all required forms at the Consulate.

If you have ever possessed a Hungarian passport, but it has expired, please bring it with you nonetheless!

2. Address card (if you have one)

In case you do not have a valid Hungarian passport or other form of personal identification: bring with you a valid government photo ID which contains your full name (i.e., driver’s license, foreign ID, passport).

If you are requesting a passport with a different name from your previously issued passport or personal identification, then also bring a Hungarian document supporting your name change (for example, document of change in name, birth certificate, or marriage certificate);

The consular fee (the exact amount of the fees are found in the “Consular fees” section of the Start menu)

Passport application for individuals under 18 years of age:

According to current legislation, in the case of a minor’s passport request, the presence of the child and both parents are mandatory to submit the request. Both parents must possess valid ID, which in the case of a Hungarian parent may only be a personal ID or passport.

When is only one of the parents’ presence sufficient?

If only one of the parents has legal custody over the child:

This may be demonstrated by a legal document such as a legally binding court decision, a court-approved parental agreement, or the death certificate of a deceased parent.

If the parent submitting the passport application has the written consent of the other parent:

The presence of only one of the parents (or a legal guardian) is sufficient if he or she is able to present written consent of the other parent (or legal guardian) in the form of a document previously signed in the presence of a public notary, a custody authority, the head of a penitentiary institution, a consular officer, a passport authority, or district clerk.

Furthermore, it is sufficient if one parent submitting the request possesses either a written declaration of consent from the parent not in attendance that has been certified by an honorary consul or a public notary known to the Consulate General (Attention: in this case the document must also pass a diplomatic authentication review!), or a declaration of consent signed by the parent not in attendance in front of two witnesses. The parental declaration may be downloaded here: "Consent letter of absent parent", or in the “Documents to download” option in the Start menu.

Documents to submit:

1. A valid document proving the citizenship of the child, if he or she possesses one

2. The Hungarian birth certificate of the child

If the birth of the child has not yet been registered in Hungary, the process of obtaining a Hungarian birth certificate is attached to the passport request. The child will be given a Hungarian birth certificate as part of the procedure. We kindly ask you to read the information found in the “Birth registry” section in the Start menu on our home page and download all required forms.

Attention! If the Hungarian registration of the birth of the child is necessary for the submission of the passport request (because the child does not possess a Hungarian birth certificate) and the marriage of the parents has not been registered in Hungary either, then the process for the child’s birth certificate and the parents’ marriage certificate can be commenced at the same time.

3. Valid personal identification for both parents, and in the case of a Hungarian parent, this must be in the form of a valid Hungarian personal ID or passport

4. 1 colour photograph if the child under 3 years of age

5. Consular fee

Passport application for individuals under 12 years of age:

To submit a passport application for children under 12 the consent of both parents is necessary, however the child can be absent. Please read the relevant guidelines in the “Parental consent” section of this page.

Special rule regarding the passport application of children under the age of 6

If the child was born abroad (outside of Hungary) and his or her birth has not yet been registered by a Hungarian registrar into the registry of births, and the child has not yet reached the age of 6, upon the submission of the passport application and the birth certificate application (and, if applicable, the marriage certificate application or father’s declaration of acknowledgement), the procedure for the passport will take place on the regular schedule, independently from the birth certificate.

If the submission of the passport request happens at the same time as the registration of birth, we ask that you also complete the “Declaration regarding the passport request of individuals under the age of six” document also.

Necessary documents:

Parental Consent Form

Declaration regarding the passport request of individuals under the age of six

Declaration of number of children in the family
