Honoring the „Freedom Fighters" in Toronto’s Historic Hungarian District! The Ontario Heritage Trust - in partnership with the Consulate General of Hungary, the Hungarian Canadian Cultural Centre Magyar Ház and the Hungarian Research Institute of Canada - has officially installed the Hungarian ’56ers Provincial Plaque at the intersection of Bloor St. with Spadina Ave, in the area of the historic Hungarian restaurants of Toronto. This plaque tells the powerful story of Hungarian refugees who fought the Soviet forces during the 1956 Revolution, than fled to Ontario. They didn't just find a new world in Ontario; they helped shape it. Their arrival was a landmark event that pushed Canada toward a more open and compassionate immigration policy that assisted its transformation toward today's mosaic society. Many of them settled right here in Toronto, converting the blocks around downtown Spadina into a vibrant Hungarian District. For decades, this neighborhood was alive with the sounds of the Hungarian language, and the bustling energy of their businesses, deli shops, restaurants and social life. Their contributions to arts, sciences, and economy are immeasurable.
