INFORMATION REGARDING REGULATIONS ENTERING HUNGARY DURING THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC

Given the COVID-19 pandemic situation, the Hungarian government has introduced new rules for entry into Hungary effective September 1, 2020.

1. A Hungarian citizen can always return home, this right is non-deniable, but the requirement is 14 days of mandatory quarantine.
Quarantine must be spent:

a) at your home or residence in Hungary, or

b) should you not have a home or residence in Hungary, and you are a Hungarian citizen legally residing abroad, at a designated official quarantine location, or, if appropriate, at a residence location indicated by you.

2. You may only be released from quarantine on the basis of 2 negative tests having been completed at least 48 hours apart. Test results generated in a Schengen-area country, the United States of America or Canada, and certified in writing in either Hungarian or English, will be accepted as the first test.

Leaving quarantine for testing purposes is not an individual right; it must be requested from the local epidemiological authority, which may allow it. The cost of the tests is borne by the citizen.

3. 3. As a general rule, foreign citizens may not enter Hungary effective September 1, 2020..

Exceptions to the general rule are:

  • Foreign citizens and their family members possessing the right of permanent residency in Hungary;
  • Foreign citizens who possess a residence permit of more than 90 days issued by the Hungarian immigration authority;
  • Foreign athletes competing for, or sports professionals affiliated with a Hungarian sports organization, if they enter after participating in an international sporting event held abroad;
  • An immediate relative of a Hungarian citizen.

A foreign citizen entering Hungary effective September 1, 2020 must be quarantined for 14 days.
