There are different types of names change procedures and the fee depends on the type of procedure required. You can find our prices under "Consular fees". Our fees can only be paid by cards.
- General Information
Hungarian passport can be provided for only Hungarian citizens. Therefore, the applicant must prove their Hungarian citizenship at the beginning of the procedure. Hungarian citizenship can be proved by the following documents:
- a valid Hungarian identity card,
- a valid Hungarian passport or a Hungarian passport that has expired less than one year ago,
- a valid Hungarian citizenship certificate or a valid citizenship statement,
- a document of naturalisation.
If you do not have any of the above-mentioned documents and your citizenship cannot be verified by the personal information and address registry system, you must firstly initiate the verification of citizenship procedure and then you will be able to apply for a passport. - Application for passport (over 18 years)
There are 4 different types of procedure:
- Your passport expired for less than a year ago or still valid and there has been no change in your marital status since your last passport application.
This is the standard procedure with a processing time of 20 days, which does not include mailing.
- Your passport expired for less than a year ago or still valid and there has been a change of your marital status (marriage and/or divorce) since your previous passport application.
In this case, your marriage and/or divorce has/have to be registered firstly and then you will be able to apply for passport at a separate appointment. Detailed information about registering vital statistics event can be found on “Registration birth/marriage/divorce and death” section.
- Your passport expired for more than a year ago (and your citizenship cannot be verified otherwise), however there has been no change in your marital status.
In this case, your citizenship will be verified by ex officio alongside with the passport application. The period for the passport application will be extended by the time taken to verify your citizenship.
- Your passport expired for more than a year ago (and your citizenship cannot be verified otherwise), and there has been a change in your marital status (marriage and/or divorce).
In this case, a verification of citizenship procedure needs to be initiated and then your citizenship will have been verified, you will be able to apply for passport at a separate appointment.
- Special regulations for minors (under 18 years)
Be advised that Hungarian citizenship for minors must be proven in the same way as it must in the procedure for adult. Therefore, documents proving the minor's citizenship must be presented. In the case where the minor has never had any Hungarian documents, i.e. his/her birth has not yet been registered
- In the case of a minor under 6 years, passport can be applied alongside with the registration of birth. In this case, the "Declaration for passport application for children under 6 years " form has to be completed and submitted. The form can be downloaded from the bottom of this page.
- For minors aged between 6 and 14 years, the registration of birth has to be requested first than can be apply for passport at a separate appointment.
- For minors over 14 years, the verification of citizenship procedure has to be initiated which includes the birth registration.
Both parents' consent (and presence) is required to apply for a minor's passport. Parents must have a valid photo identification document, which must be presented on the spot. (In the case of guardianship, the decision ordering guardianship must be presented.)
When is only one of the parents’ presence sufficient?
- If the parent in present has sole custody.
In this case, a court order or death certificate must be presented.
- The parent in present has the consent of the other parent.
The presence of only one of the parents (or a legal guardian) is sufficient if the other parent has given his/her express prior written consent to getting a passport for the child.
The consent may be given before an honorary consul or a local notary. In the case of a notarial document, an Apostille certificate has to attached to it. The parent not in attendance may also give his/her consent by signing the "Declaration of Consent" form (at the bottom of this page) in front of two witnesses. IMPORTANT! The original of the consent form must be presented at the time of passport application and the copies of the documents containing the photograph and signature of the parent not in attendance and witnesses have to be presented.
If the parent(s) brings a photo of the child under 12 years, there is no need for the child to be present in person.
- What shall I bring with me for the appointment?
Please bring and present the originals of the following documents:
- One of the above-mentioned documents which proves Hungarian citizenship.
- Your Hungarian passport which has expired previously, even years ago.
- A valid Hungarian (ID card, driver's license) or Canadian document (driver's license or photo ID) which contains your photo and signature, and that can be used for identification purposes. (Presenting only Health Card is not acceptable!)
- In case of a minor, the birth certificate of the child must be presented. Photo of the child under 12 years.
- Proof of name (birth and/or marriage certificate and/or name change certificate).
- Consular fee, payable by credit/debit card.
When applying for passport for a minor, the above-mentioned documents must be presented for the child and the parent’s valid ID card has also to be presented.
New passports can be picked up within one year of the date of notification of the passport's arrival. Passports not being picked up by the indicated deadline will be destroyed!
